James Owens' willingness to work through loneliness, fear and doubt exemplifies the concept of quiet courage. James withstood the pains of being a pioneer to make a difference for those who came after him. It was never about James. It was always about service to others.
QUIET COURAGE DOCUMENTARY
Quiet Courage is the untold story of the football pioneer, the husband, the father, and the man. Broadcast on public television, Quiet Courage tells the story of the Highly recruited pioneer athlete. More than fifty colleges pursued his talents. Auburn, the state land grant University in rural southeast Alabama, won him. James Curtis Owens, with his Auburn teammates for life, tells his story with the same quiet courage with which he lived it.

THE JAMES OWENS COURAGE AWARD
The James Owens Courage Award is presented annually to a current or former Auburn football player who has displayed courage in the face of adversity, distinguishing himself while contributing to the betterment of Auburn University. James Owens, the first African American scholarship football player at Auburn in 1969, was given the inaugural award named in his honor.
